Li Xianyong is a poet who lived in the late Tang Dynasty.The Complete Poetry of the Tang has three volumes,containing one hundred and ninty-six.Li Xianyong failed several times in the imperial examination,and then he was recruited to be a sheriff.Li Xianyong responded with monk like Xiu Mu in Mount Lushan due to the war.Therefore,he is a member of Lushan poetry group in the late tang dynasty and the Five Dynasties.There are three main aspects of Li Xianyong’s thoughts in his poems.The first is the concern for current affairs and politics,the second is the thought of the fate of the imperial examination,and the third is the integration of the thoughts of the three religions.Li Xianyong wrote poems with a variety of themes,mainly including four kinds of poems,such as describing scenery and chanting things,responding to others,expressing one’s thoughts and feelings,and travelling and touring,as well as some other small themes.Li Xianyong’s poetic art is mainly manifested in two aspects.The first is his elegant and mundane language style which is combined with the pursuit of originality and integrity.The second is his colorful and pluralistic poetic conceptualization.Li Xianyong’s poetic art is not only the reflection of his conception of poem,but also the result of his study of Li Bai,Li He and Zhang Ji.Later generations had different opinions on Li Xianyong’poems.For example,Yang Wanli and Lu You in the Song dynasty positively affirmed Li Xianyong’s works,while Xin Wenfang in the Yuan dynasty held a negative attitude.Under the perspective of Tang and Song poetry changing,Li Xianyong’s poetry works not only show the style of traditional Tang poetry,but also reveal part of the quality of Song poetry.Together with other poets,Li Xianyong’s poems formed an important bridge for the transformation of Tang and Song poetry. |
