The root of American music is African American music, that is,black music, and jazz derived from it.Many composers in the 20th century consciously used Jazz materials in their compositions.George Gershwin was born in the late 19th century.Although he did not receive formal music education,he successfully integrated jazz into serious music by virtue of his high musical talent, professionalized jazz and created Jazz symphony. The unique Jazz genes of jazz, such as jazz harmony, blues scale and ragtime rhythm, are perfectly integrated into the work "an American in Paris".At present, there is little research on Gershwin's works in China. This paper will take Gershwin's Symphonic Poem "an American in Paris" as an example to discuss the Jazz factors in detail,so as to provide reference for future music creation.
