A Study On Cross-cultural Adaptation Of American Students In Beijing

In recent years,with the further development of education field between China and America,There is an increasing number of American students come to China to study since Beijing is the International communication center of China.At the same time,American international students would face much more challenges caused by differences between Chinese culture and American culture during the process of cross-cultural adaptation Therefore,it is very necessary to study the problem of cross-cultural adaptation of American students in Beijing.The thesis made a research of 141 American students from Beijing Normal university,Beijing language university,Beijing foreign language university and Princeton University Chinese program in Beijing,and the thesis also made pointed interview to 8 American students and 6 foreign students teachers from these universities to provide abundant statistical and theoretical basis.The thesis is aimed at exploring the factors and problems exiting in the progress of cross-culture adaption of American from four aspects of life adaption,culture environment adaption,learning adaption and social support of American students.By analysis,living material conditions and infrastructure would be greatest problems in life adaptation of American international students;the differences in values and cultural customs are major problems in the aspect of cultural environment adaptation;the problems caused by the differences in definition of friend relationship among American international students is more prominent.At the same time,age,Chinese level,education background,life experience in Beijing and stay with families or not are all unique influence factors for American students adaptability.According to above analysis,this thesis can be concluded that the success of American international students cross-cultural adaptation demands joint efforts from Chinese universities,American international students administration and American individual students.
