Banking In Athens In The Time Of Demosthenes

The economy of Demosthenes period in Athens,though far from the peak of the classical era,still saw a second small peak of economic development.During this period,trapezai(banking)became an important economic sector in the Athenian society,especially those run by trapezitai(private bankers),which played an important role in the economic life of Athens.This thesis aims to form a comprehensive understanding of the trapezai in Demosthenes period by analyzing the emergence,functions and employees of the trapezai,and then explores the role of Athenian trapezai in the political and economic life of Demosthenes period.This thesis is divided into six parts:Introduction,Origin and meaning of trapezai,Functions of trapezai,Practitioners of trapezai,Influence of trapezai on Athenian society and Conclusion.The Introduction mainly introduces the significance of this topic and the relevant research trends at home and abroad.The first chapter is mainly about the relationship between the coin using and the generation of trapezai,and explains some related concepts.Chapter two and chapter three respectively introduce the bank’s function and the bank practitioners in Demosthenes period.By analyzing the bank’s function,the main content of chapter four is drawn,that is,the influence of banking on the politics,economy and Athenians’thinking of at that time.
