The “Production-Oriented Approach” is a foreign language teaching theory developed to solve the problems of “time-consuming and low-efficiency” showed in foreign language teaching of our country.This teaching method advocates “the combination of learning and application” and “promoting learning through application” and it follows the teaching process of“driving-promoting-evaluation”.Many scholars in our country have studied the practical application of this theory in many aspects and obtained many valuable research results.However,much more researchers have been focusing on the studies about the practical and theoretical development of Production-Oriented Approach through applying it in college foreign language teaching,the application studies of Production-Oriented Approach in English teaching in high schools are slightly inadequate.Especially,few related studies have been done about the effect of Production-Oriented Approach on the learning motivation of high school students.Motivation,as an internal psychological state of learners,is one of the most crucial factors affecting learners’ academic achievements and learning effect.Therefore,this paper attempts to study the effectiveness of Production-Oriented Approach in high school English teaching from the perspective of learning motivation.This study intends to answer the following three research questions :(1)How does the Production-Oriented Approach affect the learning motivation level of senior high school English learners?(2)How does the Production-Oriented Approach affect the tendency of learning motivation of senior high school English learners?(3)How does the learning motivation level vary with learners’ grades?In this study,100 students from parallel classes(5)、(16)of high school in Qufu City were studied.Class(5)is the experimental class,while,class(16)is the control class,with the student number of each class being 50.The experimental class adopts the Production-Oriented Approach in the teaching while the control class adopts the traditional English teaching method.Scale,questionnaire and semi-structured interview are used to collect data.The combination of qualitative and quantitative analysis is carried out in the research.The conclusions are as follows:(1)The application of Production-Oriented Approach in high school can improve learners’ English learning motivation.Among learning attitude,learning desire,effort degree and learning purpose,the change of learners’ learning attitude is the most significant,followed by the change of learning desire,and followed by the change of effort degree while there is no significant change in learning purpose.(2)The application of Production-Oriented Approach in high school can change the tendency of English learners’ learning motivation.The results show that the Production-Oriented Approach can enhance learners’ tendency of integration motivation and internal learning motivation and improve learners’ integration motivation and internal motivation level.(3)There are differences in the changing of motivation among students of different grade levels.The English learning motivation level of high-grade students has been significantly improved and the English learning motivation level of middle grade students has also been improved,while the low-grade students’ learning motivation level has no extinct change.Based on the above results,this study suggests that:(1)Teachers should set reasonable objectives and tasks,and elaborately design the teaching process.(2)Teachers should consider students’ learning levels and reasonably set the difficulty of tasks.(3)Teachers should give full play to the positive role of evaluation in teaching.Limited by the conditions,the experiment time of this study is short and the sample is relatively small.However,the research findings can provide meaningful enlightenment for improving the quality of English teaching in senior high school,improving the level of English learning motivation and learning enthusiasm of high school students,and provide practical references for further research in this field.
