Kawase Hasui was the representative artist of scenery woodcut in Shin-hanga in the first half of the 20 th century.In his lifetime,he created more than 600 woodcuts.He inherited the traditional techniques of ukiyo-e,based on the modern concept of sketching and introduced western painting techniques into woodcut.In the development of ukiyo-e to modern woodcut played a role in linking the past and future.The author through the systematic combs of Kawase Hasui's scenery woodcuts,analyze its characteristics in color,light and shadow,object shape building and rubbing techniques,emphatically discuss in the context of eastern and western art exchanges,how does Kawase Hasui selectively absorb ukiyo-e and western modern art forms,how to seek change,innovation and way out base on their own traditional culture.
