| Sarah Lucas is one of the most influential and important artists from Britain.Her art career began in the 1980 s when she joined the "Young British Artists"(YBAs).Her art works are presented in various ways,covering painting,sculpture,installation,photography,and video.Sarah Lucas' s masterpieces are impressive because of a bold,explicit,and direct advocacy for female rights.Many people think the message conveyed by her works indicate the provocation to sexism and the subversion to gender stereotypes.Considering the fact that female body and female violence usually occur in her works,Sarah Lucas was probably influenced by feminism during her creation,in which indignation of women over sexism is expressed radically.The influence is characterized by the depiction of female identity in her works,which has been developing over the past 40 years.In this dissertation,the issue of "gender identity" in Lucas' s works is discussed.After studying the various gender identities presented in different works and the measures adopted to visualize these gender identities,the basic reasons for the diversity of gender identity has been discussed.As it can be seen,personal gender identity can represent in diverse ways rather than is limited to two types of physical gender identity,i.e.male and female.This study is based on sociology,sexuality,and western philosophy principles about the fundamental theories of gender and identity.Explicit historical circumstance and specific personal background are considered in the analysis of Sarah Lucas' s works,in which image analysis method is used to analyze the visual images and the visualization language.In this way,the diversity of gender identity and the variation of representation in Lucas' s works are discussed.As shown by the study and discussion on Sarah Lucas' s works,gender identity is related to dominant social culture,temporal cultural trend,and local custom environment,result in locality,flexibility,and diversity of gender identity. |
