The number of people dying of cancer is increasing every year, and the metastasis of cancer is the main cause of death of cancer patients.Although metastasis is very important in clinic, little is known about it.Stephen Paget developed the“seed”(cancer cells)and “soil”(distant metastatic organ)theory of metastasis in 1889.It's established that there is a nonrandom pattern in cancer metastases. In other words, only certain “seeds” can be planted in certain “soils”.Previous studies reported that“seed” shows characteristics of a “soil” post-seeded into the “soil”.But when this feature will be available is not yet known. In this article,we start with normal tissue-specific m RNA,and through bioinformatics analysis,we have proved that each tissue has its own unique biological functions, for example, the brain has specific neuron-related functions.Next,we collected the metastatic tumor information of several common cancers and the information of the primary tumor indicating the metastatic site from the GEO database, and performed differential gene analysis. We found that metastatic tumors have the molecular characteristics of metastatic target organs. For example, brain metastases from breast cancer are enriched in brain neuron-related functions, which coincides with the previous results.Simultaneously, primary tumors have molecular characteristics of a “soil” in patients with the “soil” metastases. For example, the primary breast cancer tumor with brain metastasis has been enriched with neuron-related functions. The characteristics of a “soil” are likely to be primary features of “seed” gained ahead of seeding into the “soil”.Therefore,we speculate that the characteristics of "soil" in primary tumors may be involved in determining the potential "soil" in cancer metastasis. Our results can provide new insights for the development of cancer metastasis prevention, including brain metastasis, which has many unresolved challenges in clinical treatment.
