In recent years, affected by global climate change and regional human activities, the lake area is shrinking, and the ecological function around the lake is deteriorating, which poses a serious threat to the lake ecosystem and environmental security. In view of this, the study on the spatiotemporal evolution process of lake water area and the analysis of its influencing factors will help to understand the interaction between environmental changes and human activities in the lake basin, and provide theoretical support for the rational development and utilization of lake resources and scientific supervision and protection.Jiangsu province belongs to the plain Lake area in the east of China, with many lakes and developed water system. It has the highest Lake ownership rate in China, and the total Lake area ranks the third among the provinces. The study of the spatiotemporal evolution process and its influencing factors of lakes in Jiangsu Province can provide effective reference for the study of lake evolution in other regions of China.Based on the ancient and modern maps, historical documents and five remote sensing image data from 1984 to 2017 since the beginning of the 18 th century, this study uses the methods of historical geography, remote sensing and GIS to analyze the spatiotemporal evolution process and reasons of typical lakes in Jiangsu Province in recent 300 years. The results show that:(1)Influenced by natural factors and human activities, lakes in different regions have different evolution characteristics. The evolution of lakes in Jiangsu Province is generally from shrinkage to stability. In recent years, with the development of Lake Tourism and urbanization, the change of lake shoreline is relatively small and tends to be stable due to cement fixation;(2)The influencing factors of lake evolution in Jiangsu Province are different in different periods.During the historical period, the evolution of lakes in Jiangsu Province was mainly caused by natural factors such as the relationship between the Yellow River and the Huaihe River, sediment deposition and human factors such as lake reclamation and river dredging. In modern times, human activities such as reclaiming land, building water conservancy projects, and land use change around the lake have become the dominant factors of lake evolution, while natural factors such as precipitation and hydrological process are relatively weak;(3)The evolution of Luoma Lake,Hongze Lake and Gaoyou Lake in Northern Jiangsu is consistent, and the historical period is greatly influenced by the relationship between the Yellow River and Huaihe River.Since the 1940 s,human activities have become the dominant factor in the evolution of lakes;the evolution of Taihu Lake,Shijiu lake and Gucheng Lake in Southern Jiangsu is not consistent.During the historical period,Taihu Lake was mainly affected by natural factors such as climate, sea level fluctuation and siltation of the three rivers. The evolution of Shijiu lake and Gucheng Lake was mainly affected by human reclamation activities. After the 1980 s,the areas of Taihu Lake,Shijiu lake and Gucheng Lake tended to be stable due to the enhancement of government protection and human awareness of environmental protection.
