| Our country has issued a series of documents to rectify academic misconduct,further standardize the academic behavior of teachers and students,and strengthen the construction of academic integrity.However,academic scandals still occur from time to time in China.Honor system is an important part of the academic integrity system of American universities,and it is one of the characteristic systems of American universities,which plays an important role in the construction of students’ academic integrity.The University of Maryland complied with the social development and established the Code of Academic Integrity as its honor system,which became the beginning and typical representative of the improved honor system.The improved honor system is conducive to clearly conveying the importance of academic integrity in the dialogue of multiple subjects,In order to influence the possibility of improving students’ honesty when it comes to academic work,this paper takes the honor system of the University of Maryland as a case study,and deeply analyzes its honor system,which provides some enlightenment and ideas for the construction of academic integrity in China,and has certain practical significance.This paper follows the principle of combining macro and micro,static research with dynamic research,This paper studies the honor system of the University of Maryland by means of literature research,historical research and case study.On the basis of combing the existing research results,This paper deeply analyzes the background,reasons,development process,main contents and implementation process of its honor system,explores the supporting conditions for its effective operation,analyzes its effects,summarizes the characteristics of the system,provides experience for the construction of academic integrity in China,helps the construction of academic integrity in China break through the bottleneck,and realizes the goal of cultivating people by virtue.Honor code is based on undergraduates and postgraduates,By defining the concept of academic dishonesty and specifying the punishment mechanism and defense procedure of academic dishonesty in detail,A management system established by bringing students into the academic community,emphasizing the role of peer groups,promoting students’ self-management,self-education and self-growth,and standardizing students’ academic activities and maintaining the academic integrity atmosphere on campus.The honor code of the University of Maryland is based on the Code of Academic Integrity.By setting up a student behavior office to be responsible for the implementation of the honor code,and setting up a college student judicial institution,a student honor council,an appeal committee and other institutions to be responsible for the investigation and trial of academic dishonesty cases,different institutions are responsible for different links,so as to fully guarantee the fairness and impartiality of cases.The operation process of honor code includes seven major processes: students sign honor commitments when they enter school,relevant departments publicize and carry out academic integrity education,teachers and students report and departments accept and examine,make penalties,appeal,cancel cases and record cases.The honor code of the University of Maryland has produced good results.Besides setting up special management institutions to ensure the implementation of the honor code,other supporting conditions are indispensable.For example,the policies and regulations promulgated by the US government provide institutional guarantee for the implementation of the honor code;The campus culture of the University of Maryland advocating honesty provides spiritual support for the implementation of the honor code of the University of Maryland;The support of internal and external departments provides organizational support for the implementation of the honor code of the University of Maryland;Various awards established by the university provide material support for the implementation of the honor code of the University of Maryland.It is found that the honor code of the University of Maryland has the following characteristics: people-oriented,paying attention to the sustainability of dialogue;Clear rights and responsibilities and pay attention to the fairness of procedures;Diverse punishments and pay attention to the differentiation of punishments;Support pluralism and pay attention to the systematicness of operation.Based on the national conditions of our country and the actual situation of universities,and drawing lessons from the experience of the University of Maryland in the construction of academic integrity,this study summarizes four inspirations for the construction of academic integrity in Chinese universities: first,establish the concept of student-oriented and give full play to the main role of students in education;The second is to prepare specific and feasible rules and regulations to ensure that there are rules to follow;The third is to set up a special management department to make it worthwhile and have clear responsibilities;The fourth is to shape people through the environment and create a campus culture advocating honesty. |
