Abstract/Summary:
The parental expectations of children with autism spectrum disorders refer to the parents’ hope and expectation of their children’s adulthood status based on their own academic experience and actual situation. At present, the research on expectations mainly focuses on education level, and the research objects are mostly teachers and ordinary parents. The expectations of parents with exceptional children have not attracted the active attention of researchers, especially the level and basic content of parental expectations of children with autism spectrum disorders in China are unclear. From another perspective, parental expectations actually reflect their preliminary judgments on the children’s future development, and the anticipation of future will affect the individual’s current attitude and behaviors. Therefore,it is proposed that individual expectations are closely related to their behavior characteristics. As the first and important participants in the intervention of children with autism spectrum disorders, parents’ behaviors have an important impact on the children’s development direction and rehabilitation effect. However, the relationship between the parental expectations of children with autism spectrum disorders and the parental participation in early intervention is not clear,so it is necessary to explore its mechanism.According to the expected value theory, the motivation of an individual to complete various tasks depends on his judgment of the probability and value of the task. Therefore, this study hypothesizes that the parental expectations of children with autism spectrum disorders can affect the degree of parental paricipation in early intervention. At present,China lacks tools to study parental expectations of children with autism spectrum disorders.Based on the complilation of foreign questionnaires and the results of interviews, this study finally formed the local version of Parental Expectations of Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders Scale,so as to further explore the current situation of parental expectations of children with autism spectrum disorders and its predictive effect on parental participation in early intervention. The main research conclusions are as follows:First, the revised Parental Expectations of Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders Scale includes four dimensions: future safety and security, social participation, ordinary life, and personal satisfaction. The scale has 20 items with good reliability, basically meets the psychological measurement standards.Second, parental expectations of children with ASD is at a relatively high level, with the highest future safety and security scores, followed by social participation and personal satisfaction, and the ordinary life has the lowest scores.Third, parental expectations of children with ASD have no significant differences in parental roles, work status, sex of children, only child, parental age,and other demographic variables, while parental expectations on ordinary life are extremely significant in terms of children’s degree of obstacle.Fourth, parental participation in early intervention of children with ASD is above average, with the highest score for family education, followed by cooperation and communication, and the lowest score for fighting for social rights. The parental participation in early intervention of children with ASD has no significant differences in demographic variables such as parental role, work status, sex of children, and only child,However, family education and cooperation and communication differ significantly in educational level.Parental participation in early intervention, cooperation and communication, and fighting for social rights is significantly different in the resettlement way;Parental participation in early intervention, family education and cooperation and communication is significantly different in family location.Fifth, except that there is no significant correlation between ordinary life and family education, there is a significant correlation between other two groups.Parental expectations of children with ASD and social participation can significantly positively predict parental participation in early intervention, and parental expectations of personal satisfaction for children with ASD can significantly positively predict fighting for social rights.Based on the conclusions, this study puts forward suggestions from four aspects:establishing a guarantee system for older autistic groups, developing a platform system to provide various support, improving the education system and the quality of education, and expanding the longitudinal research to map the development trend.
