The Employment Effect Of Chinese Manufacturing Intermediate Goods Imports

Affected by the financial crisis and COVID-19,global economic growth has slowed down,the scale of trade has fallen sharply and the unemployment problem has become increasingly prominent.When trade and employment are severely impacted,on the one hand,our country proposes to expand the imports of intermediate goods,employment policies must be fully exerted to ensure the livelihood of people and ease structural contradictions in employment.The import of manufacturing intermediate goods is an important part of our country’s import trade,and the development of the manufacturing industry has provided a large number of domestic jobs,it is an important way to solve the domestic employment problem.Therefore,based on the perspective of intermediate goods imports,studying the impact of intermediate goods imports on employment is beneficial to reflect the true effect of import trade on employment.This article mainly consists of five parts,the first part we explain the background and significance of the topic,and use the literature research method to summarize the literature on related topics.In the second part,we summarize the related theories from the theoretical level,and analyze the mechanism of the impact of intermediate goods imports on employment.The third part we use the statistical description method to analyze the status quo of intermediate goods imports and the status quo of employment;Through comparative analysis,we compared the sectoral and countryspecific differences in intermediate goods imports and the sectoral differences in manufacturing employment.The fourth part we use panel model to make an empirical analysis of the employment effect of manufacturing intermediate goods imports,and study its sectoral and regional differences.The fifth part we summarize the main conclusions of this article according to the current situation and empirical results,and put forward some countermeasures and suggestions.The main conclusions of this paper are as follows:(1)The scale of intermediate goods imports in our country’s manufacturing industry continues to expand,and the middle-tech and high-tech sectors are the main import sectors of intermediate goods;(2)The scale of employment in our country’s manufacturing industry continues to expand,the proportion of high-skilled labor is rising,and the employment structure is in the process of optimization;(3)The overall regression results show that the intermediate goods imports inhibited the growth of overall and low-skilled labor employment,and promoted the employment growth of high-skilled labor;(4)The regression by sectors found that the intermediate goods imports significantly promoted the employment growth in technology-intensive sectors,and inhibited the employment in the primary product sector,resource and laborintensive sectors;(5)The regression by region found that the intermediate goods imports from OECD countries play a more significant role in promoting the employment of high-skilled labor.China should continue to promote the development of intermediate trade,to promote the adjustment of employment structure by intermediate goods imports;Increase the level of R&D investment in various industries and increase the training of employees to reduce the impact of intermediate goods imports on low-skilled labor.
