An Analysis On The Institutional Cause Of The High Rate Of The Princeton University Alumni Giving

In recent years,under the active advocacy of the national and local governments,the whole society has gradually formed a good trend of donating money for education,and the records of the total amount of donations by alumni of Chinese universities and the amount of donations by alumni themselves have been constantly refreshed.However,the core group of alumni donation in Chinese universities is the rich alumni,while the donation rate of other alumni is relatively low.Moreover,according to the survey,the average donation rate of alumni of Chinese universities is less than 5%,and the alumni donation behavior has obvious personal bias.Although large donations from individual alumni are eye-catching,the cultural significance of alumni donation rate is much greater.According to US News and Reports,Princeton has consistently topped the list of the top10 schools in terms of alumni giving from 2013 to 2018,with alumni giving rates of around 60 percent.By exploring the causes of the high donation rate of Princeton university alumni,we can provide some references for alumni donation of research universities in China.In this paper,Princeton university is selected as the research object for the case study,mainly for three reasons.First,among the top ten universities in terms of alumni donation rate from 2013 to 2018,Princeton university ranks the first.Second,in recent years,the United States news and world report comprehensive university rankings,Princeton university has been the first;Thirdly,it is based on the accessibility of data.Among them,the official website of Princeton university has abundant data and information about alumni donation,and there are many researches on Princeton university,which lays a good foundation for this research.This study firstly introduces the general situation of alumni donation of Princeton university and the phenomenon of high donation rate of alumni.Secondly,it mainlyexplores the causes of high donation rate of Princeton university alumni from two aspects:internal system and external system.The first is the alumni donation system of Princeton university,which consists of three aspects: perfect donation organization structure,mature annual donation program and emphasis on the role of alumni association in fundraising campaign.The second is Princeton university’s enrollment system,mainly manifested by the small enrollment scale and the implementation of selective enrollment.The third is the financial aid system of Princeton university,which can be simply summed up into two characteristics: large and wide.The fourth is the small donation system at Princeton university,where students develop their donation habits as long as they are in school.In terms of external system,it is mainly reflected in the complete tax system of American society and other related policies,such as inheritance tax,gift tax and matching fund policy,which have laid a foundation for American educational donation.In short,the tax system and endowment matching fund policy have helped stimulate the donation behavior of Princeton alumni.At the same time,religious institutions play an important role in American society,especially in philanthropy.As the core force of Princeton university campus,religion exerts a subtle influence on the high donation rate of alumni.If Princeton alumni donation is a fast-moving train,then the system is the train path dependence,drive braking,incentive restraint of the track,the longer the track,the farther the train.At the same time,the general awareness of donation,the wide range of donation ways,the standard of donation methods,the high donation rate and the management of endowment fund of Princeton university alumni have important enlightenment to the donation of alumni in our country.
