Abstract/Summary:
The Yan’an Japanese Worker and Peasant School was established by the Chinese Communist Party in the Yan’an period as an experimental system for containing and training Japanese prisoners. It also undertakes the task of the training of propaganda talents against enemies.Pertinent to communication studies, this communication mechanism is regarded as a special field. The school undertakes the task of reconstructing the ideology of the prisoners through a series of training mechanisms, mainly in forms of classroom teaching, assembly communication, and actual participation in propaganda work.Furthermore, the school has the functionality of presenting an improved image of Yan’an and of the CCP.It also exerts positive effects on the construction of the CCP’s international image.Under the circumstances of wartime, combined with the Chinese Communist Party’s experience and expertise in propaganda work against the enemies, propaganda against the enemy is an indispensable and significant part of media in wartime. The establishment of the CCP’s image also requires different perspectives to fully display its achievements in the anti-Japanese war,in order to counter the early tendency of‘stigmatized image’ in the media. The Japanese Worker and Peasant School embeds a special communication system from the perspective of the enemy’s captives into the construction of Yan’an image, which is functioning as a communication medium through varied forms of propaganda, including leaflets, broadcasting, posters, shouts, grief care packages, etc.,to the Japanese army as the main audience, constructing the social image of Yan’an,which is characterized with peace, warmth, equality, and civilization. It has reshaped the international Yan’an image while expanding and reinforcing its influence through external propaganda work. The promotion of anti-war ideologies and the discursive construction of the ideological revolution of the Japanese proletariats are the two main tasks of the Japanese Worker and Peasant School. The two main concepts are also the research focus of this cultural narrativework. It shows the coupling and development of the ideologies of both Chinese and Japanese leaders of the Japanese Worker and Peasant School.Macroscopically, this article presents the overall picture of the Japanese Worker and Peasant School, constructed by the interconnectedness of the individual system and the social system. The process is achieved by interrupting the meanings of the production mechanism, characteristics of the production, and the corresponding influences of the Japanese Worker and Peasant school.Microscopically, the thesis has the main focus on the relationship between the historical contingency and inevitability of the construction of the Japanese Work and Peasant School. The thesis analyzes the particular methodologies, contents, and effects of the school as a systematic communication medium, retrieving the specific connotations of the Yan’an image as it constructed.Integrated with the observations and researches from Japan and the United States, this article aims to analyse and re-establish the international significance and influence of the Yan’an image.
