Population agglomeration promotes the process of urbanization and regional economic growth. But at the same time, the excessive growth of population scale will also bring some economic and social problems, which will hinder the regional economic growth. In recent years,a series of talent introduction policies have been launched to promote population agglomeration. At the same time,in order to prevent the problems caused by excessive expansion of cities, some regions have introduced relevant urban planning policies. This paper will focus on the current situation of population agglomeration and regional economic growth and the contribution of population agglomeration to economic growth.According to this, put forward the relevant countermeasures and suggestionsThis paper analyzes the spatial-temporal distribution characteristics and agglomeration degree of population and economy, calculates and analyzes the correlation between them, and further uses 278 Chinese prefecture level city panel data from 1998-2018 EPS data platform Chinese city database for empirical analysis to determine the impact mechanism of population agglomeration on urban economic growth. The main conclusions are as follows:First, the current situation of China’s population agglomeration. In terms of time,China’s overall population distribution pattern is relatively stable, and the spatial distribution has always been characterized by the spatial distribution of population density decreasing from east to west;the population is concentrated in provincial capital cities; The level shows an upward trend. The population density of all provinces in China is approaching the rationalized interval, and the population density between regions is gradually shrinking.Second, the overall level of GDP growth is relatively fast, the gap in the absolute number of GDP between regions is increasing, and the regional economic growth trends vary greatly. The economic agglomeration of various provinces in China has not approached the rationalized interval, and its has become stronger and stronger.Third,There is a strong non-linear positive relationship between economic growth and population agglomeration in the eastern region. The impact of population concentration on economic growth mainly affects the current period. The economic growth and population agglomeration in the central region showed a linear growth relationship, and scientific and technological level on economic growth is more obvious in the eastern region, indicating that different regions have different economic driving forces.
