In the early 1960s,the direct involvement of the United States in the Vietnam War was greatly frustrated,and the tension between the DPRK and the United States intensified.In order to limit the development of communism on the Korean Peninsula and stabilize the situation on the Korean Peninsula,the 7th psychological operations group of the U.S.army planned and launched a leaflet psychological warfare called Operation Jilli against North Korea.Operation Jilli was the first large-scale practical application of the latest and most advanced leaflet delivery and dispersion technology in the United States at that time.It was the testing ground of the new technology.The annual report of the 7th psychological operations group of the U.S.Army and A Report on Operation Jilli provide powerful help for a comprehensive analysis and discussion about Operation Jilli.The development of American psychological warfare experienced the stage from disorder to integration.After the American Revolution,U.S.civil war,the two world wars and the Korean War,American psychological warfare has gradually developed.In 1963,the United States suffered a serious setback in the Vietnam War.At the same time,the communism in North Korea achieved rapid development.In order to stabilize the situation on the Korean Peninsula,Operation Jilli was born.The operation began in 1964 and ended in 1968.It first used the latest leaflet technology developed by Johns Hopkins University.At the same time,these technologies were further optimized and improved during Operation Jilli.The incident of "Pueblo" in 1968 directly led to the termination of the operation.The leaflet plays the role of bullets of Operation Jilli,and also is the carrier for the United States to convey the so-called truth to the North Korean people,and it is the medium for the operation to directly impact the North Korean people as well.The theme of leaflets was established after several rounds of testing and analysis.There are three main categories of the theme of leaflets:South Korea and the free world,defection and anti-Communist.The specifications of the leaflets are established after calculation based on the latest leaflet technical formula of Johns Hopkins University and the actual meteorological data of the Korean Demilitarized Zone.The total number of leaflets put in increased year by year,and nearly 600 million leaflets were put into North Korea during Operation Jilli.After the Operation Jilli,there were several serious military conflicts between the DPRK and the United States.The operation failed to stabilize the situation on the Korean Peninsula.Operation Jilli played a relatively limited role in inciting some North Koreans to defect to South Korea,and North Korea also took countermeasures against the operation due to the large number of leaflets and their unfavorable content.Since some of the leaflets used false information and fake news,the subject content of the leaflets was one-sided and unfair.Operation Jilli used and verified the latest leaflet technology in the United States at that time,which promoted the development of American psychological warfare.
