| Since the independence of Sudan in 1956,the popular protest movement has become an important microcosm of the political development and social changes in Sudan, and its development speed, organizational degree, social mobilization ability and political participation have been increasingly improved. The popular protest movement led to the downfall of the three military governments in Sudan’s history(Abd military government,Nimairi military government and Bashir military government),and played an extremely important role in the overthrow of the authoritarian government, the establishment of a civilian government, the opposition to military interference in the government and the demand for political democratization. In this paper, the Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir on April 11,2019 ousted by the military as the breakthrough point, through the historical progress of the Sudanese people protest movement, the outbreak and development characteristics of investigation, analyzed the Sudan contemporary public protest movement to the influence of political and social transformation and change, and explore the Sudan’s main contradictions and challenges facing the current,And the potential opportunities if the protest movement succeeds. In terms of the historical progress of protest movements, this paper analyzes the reasons why mass protest movements in 1964,1985 and 2018 could overthrow the military regime by summarizing the background of popular protest movements during the Abd military government,Nimaili military government and Bashir military government. In terms of the reasons for the outbreak of the protest movement, this paper starts with the political, economic and social problems in Sudan, explores the deep and direct reasons for the outbreak of the current protest movement in Sudan, and analyzes how geopolitics affect the popular protest movement in Sudan. The deep-seated reasons for the frequent protest movements in Sudan are mainly the continuous deterioration of the country’s economic and social conditions, while the autocracy and corruption of the military government are the direct causes for the outbreak of protest movements. In addition, the interference of external forces is also an important factor affecting the popular protest movement; In terms of the development characteristics of the protest movement, this paper analyzes the different characteristics between the current protest movement in Sudan, the protest movement in Sudan’s history and the demonstrations during the "Arab Spring" from the aspects of the protesters’ participation subjects, mobilization modes, struggle modes and main demands. The political, economic, social and other structural problems that Sudan has accumulated for a long time are difficult to fundamentally improve in a short time, and the inherent defects of the government’s governance system and governance capacity will be difficult to overcome. The contemporary Sudanese popular protest movement may be long-term and recurring. In addition, this paper focuses on the impact of contemporary Sudanese protest movements and three possible prospects for political democratization in Sudan, namely, the military regime rebounding, the escalation of internal conflicts,or the initiation of political transformation. The success of political democratization in Sudan depends on the ability of the present transitional Government to resolve the political, economic and social crises in the Sudan and overcome the cycle of internal fighting that has plagued the civil government in the Sudan. It is urgent for the transitional government of Sudan to solve the problems of people’s livelihood and improve its governance capacity, and the positive interaction between the protesters and the transitional government is the key to promoting political democratization and social reform in Sudan. |
