The idea in my thesis is to identify the long-term obstacles to Turkey and Serbia’s accession to the European Union and to establish which political demands have played a greater role in this journey. The question is whether the EU will be able to take the next step in unification and whether it will cross the cultural border of Europe with the accession of Serbia and Turkey. In this thesis, the EU enlargement process in the western part of the Balkans, especially in Serbia, and the country of Turkey, will be examined further. The enlargement of the EU is already a phenomenon of over half a century, covering an essential part of the continent of Europe and impacting significantly the nature of its overall growth. This is why the main aim is to get the Western Balkans into the European Union and thus to enhance the economic and mutual ties that were divided during the Balkan wars.Serbia is a particular challenge, being the largest and most complex nation in the region.Similar reasoning is used for the accession process of Turkey, where cultural differences seem to play a bigger role than ever before in any other accession. Therefore, the EU’s key goal is to integrate certain countries in this part of the European continent to achieve peace, security and growing prosperity.
