Abstract/Summary:
Europe is the birthplace of sovereign and nation-states,and it is also the most mature region for integrated development. It is precisely because of these characteristics that Europe has become an important region for the development and evolution of the relationship between local,nation-state and supranational entities. In recent years, the process of European integration and the tide of nationalism have caused shocks to national identity to varying degrees, and become an important background of the regional secession movement. The Scottish secession movement is intensifying in this context. This paper analyzes the process of identity construction and changes of people’s identity in Scotland from the perspective of the three levels of identity construction, and then analyzes the separation of Scotland.Through the process analysis and layer-by-layer progression of several separation events in Scotland, this paper finds the significance of national identity construction. At the same time, this paper finds that there are three paradoxes behind the problem of Scottish secession: separatism and regional paradox, separatism and sovereignty paradox and sovereign state and regional paradox, and implies the essence of national development: ethnic groups, nationalities and post-nationalities.These conclusions are of great significance for the future development of national and integrated countries. This paper intends to explore the problem of Scottish separation from the perspective of the construction of Scottish identity at the local, national and supranational levels, and to dig deep into the law behind this problem.
