In the traditional media era,the mainstream media use media frame to affect readers’perception of social movements. With the advent of the social media, the reports of bottom-up social movements have new forms. The actors of social movement not only use social media to set agenda, but also change mobilization mechanism and communication paradigm.Mainstream media and social media are more likely to use collective actions frame in social movement reports, what’s different is that media choose to focus on different frames to influence the development of social movements. The strike on December 5th in France not only received support from almost all the industries in France, but also had the back of social organizations in other countries which gave it an international influence. In order to explore the media frame and the collective action frame, this study chooses Le Monde,a mainstream media organization in France, and the public page of“12.5 strike”on Facebook to conduct content analysis. The thesis also tries to explore whether this strike conforms to Internet action. This study finds that Le Monde and the strike page are different on the communication paradigm. The mainstream media have a positive attitude towards the strike, but emphasize more on diagnostic framing and prognostic framing, and less on motivational framing. The strike page uses most motivational framing to win the support of public opinion. The amount of the posts on the strike page are quite big with pictures and videos. These have very powerful influences, and attract the potential actors. In conclusion, the study tends to find the differences from mainstream media and social media in the reports of the strike on December 5th in France, and whether the social media affects the agenda setting of mainstream media.
