Abba Eban(1915-2002)is not only a famous diplomat and American expert, but also a foreign policy critic and historian of Israel. His whole life has been tightly linked with the design, implementation, criticism and research of Israeli foreign policy, and he has a great influence on Israeli foreign policy after the establishment of Israel.Since 1947 Since 1947,when Eban followed with a delegation from the Palestinian Jewish Agency to the United Nations to try to persuade member states to vote for an independent Jewish state,Eban has become a public figure, appearing frequently on the international stage.Eban advocated the establishment of normal diplomatic relations with Arab countries, the construction of a special relationship between the United States and Israel, foreign policy always serving national interests, the interaction between domestic politics and international politics, etc. However, according to the current research results, the research from the historical perspective focuses on Eban’s participation in the process of foreign policy formulation in the construction of the U.S-Israel relationship. From the view of diplomacy, the research focuses on Eban’s diplomatic activities during the Six-Day war. From the point of biography, its emphasis is Eban’s life experience. It is worth noting that the above are the research results of foreign countries and there is no writing about Eban in China. As a diplomat, what are the basic contents of Eban’s diplomatic thoughts? How does Eban put his own diplomatic ideas into practice? This paper summarizes the previous research results, most of which are scattered in the Middle East history and the discussion on the U.S.-Israel relationship.Based on the previous research results, this paper interprets Eban’s diplomatic thoughts by taking Israeli diplomatic archives,U.S.-Israel diplomatic relations archives,Soviet Union-Israel diplomatic relations archives and Eban’s autobiography as research samples. After research and analysis,Eban’s diplomatic thoughts include advocating the establishment of normal diplomatic relations with Arab countries, constructing a special relationship between the United States and Israel basing on common security and ideology, foreign policy always serving national interests, and the interaction between domestic politics and international politics. On this basis,Eban actively engaged himself in international political practice: during the second Middle East War,he made speeches at the United Nations General Assembly to win international sympathy and support for Israel.During the third Middle East War,he insisted on peace negotiations with Arab countries and helped to promote the UN Security Council Resolution 242 of November 22,1967,on the Middle East.During the third Middle East War,he actively interacted with Kissinger to promote the Middle East peace process. From the perspectives of Eban’s diplomatic thoughts and practices,he is an important political figure in the history of Israel. The study and analysis of him will help deepen our understanding of Israel’s foreign policy. |
