A Study On The Issues Of Yemeni Refugees In Jeju,South Korea

In 2018,Korean society faced a big scale of refugee issues for the first time.As the Korean economy grows,the Korean government implemented the Refugee Act,which had brought about the refugee issue.There are 484 Yemenis who came to South Korea by using Jeju island’s Visa-Free System and applied for refugee status to Jeju island.Because this is the first time for Korea to deal with the refugee issue,some problems in South Korea’s refugee system appeared such as illegal refugees,refugee security,hate crimes of refugees,the livelihood of the refugee applicants,flaws of the examiners,issues of visa-free system,and anti-Muslim sentiments.The thesis of this paper researches the shortcomings and possible solutions of the Refugee Act in Korea to help Jeju island find an effective way to solve the Yemenis’ problems and to unit Korean society to be a harmonious community.This paper analyzes the causes of the Yemeni refugee problem in Jeju Island and proposes possible solutions.This paper consists of an introduction and five chapters.The introduction describes the reason for the chosen topic,the significance of the research,current researches in state and overseas,research methods,as well as a research focus,difficulties and innovation points.The first chapter expounds on the definition of refugees and the related theories of refugees.The second chapter explains the current situation of Yemeni refugees on Jeju Island.The third chapter analyzes the causes of the Yemeni refugee problem in Jeju Island,South Korea.The fourth chapter describes the corresponding actions of the Korean government.The fifth chapter proposes the improvement strategies of the refugee system.At the present moment,the main issues of Yemeni refugees in Jeju Island are refugees camouflage,refugee security and livelihood of refugee applicants.To solve the issue of refugee security,the police should organize the types of refugee crimes and take corresponding actions for refugee crimes.Also,the community should help refugees to adapt to the new society in order to prevent refugees’ hate crimes.To solve the livelihood of the refugee applicants,the government should select suitable applicants to offer labour work opportunities and allowed them to engage in economic activities.The conclusion is that to prevent the abuse of the refugee law,the government should limit the conditions for applying for refugee status.However,the welfare system of refugees should be expanded for the sake of human rights and adaptation to the community.
