Comparative Research On Chinese And U.S. Media Reports On Sino-US Trade Friction

Abstract/Summary:
Since March 2018,the trade friction between China and the United States has been escalating.As the two most important countries in the world,Sino-US trade friction has not only caused strong concern of the people of the two countries,but also received great attention from the media of the two countries..This paper selects the news report of People’s Daily online and New York Times online on the issue of Sino-US trade friction,from March 1st,2018 to August 31,2018,as the research object,and uses content analysis and discourse analysis as main research method.The Chinese and American media’s news reports on Sino-US trade friction are compared from media presentation and news discourse aspect.This paper is divided into five parts.The first chapter explains the reasons and research significance of this paper.The second chapter analyzes the number of media reports,sources,report genres,report topics in China and the United States through content analysis,and discusses the overall reporting characteristics and the difference of Chinese and American media.The third chapter analyzes the similarities and differences between the discourse features and discourse strategies of Sino-US trade friction reports from the different levels of news discourse by means of discourse analysis.The fourth chapter is based on the comparative analysis of the previous article.The main reason why the media reports are different in the trade friction between China and United States,and then propose suggestions for mainstream media to improve international news reports practice.Finally,the conclusions of this study are made.The study found that in the report practice of Sino-US trade friction,the Chinese and American media coexisted in the overall reporting characteristics,and from the results of discourse analysis,it can be seen that the news reports of Chinese and American media show distinct discourse characteristics.In order to express their respective positions and strive for public recognition,the media of both sides have shown fierce theme competition and discourse confrontation in the Sino-US trade friction reports,and influenced the audience’s understanding and cognition of events through different news topics and news discourse.The main reason for the differences between Chinese and American media reports is the influence of different media nature,ideology and national interests on both sides,which has brought different factual frameworks and discourse strategy on the issue of Sino-US trade friction.
