As a historical city and religious shrine,Jerusalem has always been the focus of conflicts. Before the creation of the state of Israel, the Palestinian territory was under British mandate. At that time,Jerusalem was the capital of the British mandate of Palestine.Later the British mandate government was forced to hand over the Palestinian issue to the United Nations due to disputes over the handling of Jewish immigrants.During the partition period of Israel and Jordan, the urban development of East Jerusalem was far behind that of West Jerusalem and the development level of the two cities was far behind. After the end of the "June-Fifth war",east and west Jerusalem were merged, and the urban form of Jerusalem changed from division to unity which made its urban development enter a new stage.Through carding the development of city of Jerusalem since the 1960 s,the city development mainly concentrated in the reunification of Jerusalem. The mass migration has brought plenty of labor for the city’s economic development, the education development of Jerusalem has also accelerated its economic transformation, all of which become the reunification of Jerusalem promoting factor of the urban development. The urban development is mainly manifested in the urban construction scale, rapidly increasing population scale and the city’s economic development. While as Israel’s political, religious and educational center,Jerusalem has never been an industrial center. The constraints on its urban development are obvious.Political policies promoted the urban development process of Jerusalem at first, but as time goes by,they also limited the breadth and depth of its urban development. With the excessive intervention of the Israeli government’s policy, the gap between Jews and Arabs grew deeper and deeper, the imbalance of the population’s employment structure and the inequality of the residents’ education level finally hindered the development process of Jerusalem. Therefore the unique multicultural and religious background of Jerusalem makes it a typical research object of the urban development in the war and conflict areas. It is of both theoretical and practical significance to study the urban development of Jerusalem. The research object of this paper is the urban development in Jerusalem after the "June-Fifth war" based on the achievements and problems of the urban development and analyzes the reasons behind the policy. Finally the uniqueness of Jerusalem city development helps for thinking and mainly reflects in these aspects:Firstly, the country’s political stability is a prerequisite for making an unshakable environment. The Palestinian and Israeli sides, especially the Israeli government and the Jerusalem municipal authorities need to take effective measures for the fair governance of East and West Jerusalem in the interest of long-term peace and long-term interests of the two peoples.Secondly, national policy is the "tractor" of urban development, which requires the government implement targeted and consistent policies for urban areas with special backgrounds. Finally,a fair treatment should be applied for the ethnic composition of complex area,in addition to properly handling the relationship between different ethnic groups, and reducing social conflicts, which can thoroughly break the Arab-Israeli two peoples in Jerusalem segregation and isolation, rebuild trust, realize the integration, reverse transmission Arab-Israeli problem of political compromise and talks,so as to condense the core driving force of the development of the city,to make the Jerusalem worthy of the name "the City of Peace" and realize the true sense of unity. |
