Trump Administration’s Policy Toward North Korea

After the cold war,the situation on the Korean Peninsula is facing unprecedented changes.Successive US governments have failed to find a solution to the nuclear issue on the Peninsula through various means.After Trump came to power,the heads of state of North Korea and the United States met historically to discuss issues such as the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue and relations with the United States,which shows that it is different from the flexibility of previous governments,but we must also see that Trump’s starting point for North Korea policy is uncertain and unsustainable.The evolution of the US policy towards North Korea in different periods and the adjustment of Trump’s policy towards the DPRK in different periods were changed from Clinton’s "pigeon peace contact" to the eagle contact policy of the George W.Bush administration,and then adjusted to the policy of strategic patience and limited pressure in the Obama era.The trump administration continued and developed the pressure strategy during the Obama period,and changed it into a more strict "extreme pressure" strategy.However,shortly after taking office,facing the olive branch thrown by North Korea,the trump Administration chose to accept it willingly,forming a "combination of extreme pressure" and "limited contact" strategy against North Korea.This paper discusses the reasons for Trump’s policy adjustment from the domestic and international political environment faced by North Korea and the United States,as well as Trump’s own characteristics.In the United States,trump needs to maintain domestic political events such as "communication with Russia" and"mid-term elections" through the breakthrough of the North Korean nuclear issue and seek support.However,North Korea is facing great international pressure due to the sanctions,and the international community also hopes that the situation on the Korean Peninsula will not lead to war and peaceful dialogue.The trump administration’s drive to realize the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula has declined from the initial rush to solve in exchange for domestic support to the realization of the complexity of the problem and then seeking to change the solution into control.There will be no breakthrough in the negotiation between the two sides in a long period of time.Controlling the nuclear issue of the DPRK may become the focus of trump government’s policy towards the DPRK,which is caused by the different starting point and end point of the two sides’ policies.For a long time,the Peninsula issue has been complicated,not only the game between North Korea and the United States,"North Korea and South Korea,but also the struggle of neighboring powers.It is not realistic to solve the nuclear issue on the peninsula in a short time.The US will only speed up the development of nuclear weapons in Korea,promote it to return to its independent economic development path,disconnect with the international community,and cause tensions on the peninsula.The U.S.government should jump out of the strange circle of zero sum game,follow the cooperative attitude of mutual trust and consultation,negotiate with North Korea on an equal footing,avoid conflict and confrontation,promote the two tracks of denuclearization of the peninsula and the establishment of peace mechanism on the peninsula in parallel according to the principle of synchronous and equal,and finally solve them together,which will be the way out for North Korea and the United States to break the trust crisis for quite a long time.
