Abstract/Summary:
Chinese soft power has been a topic of discussion, both inside and outside of China in recent years. It is a term that has been used within China since the late 2000’s,and it has since brought a lot of international attention. An area that has been neglected in this discussion is China’s soft power policies towards Southeast Asia. This article takes a look into: what is soft power and what is the Chinese take on soft power,if there are limitations to Chinese soft power in Southeast Asia, and why China pursues its policy of soft power in the region. This article uses articles and speeches on Chinese policies, numeric data to quantify soft power, and opinion polls to understand Southeast Asia’s reaction towards China. The findings are that Chinese soft power is different from the original definition and usage of soft power, that China does face limitations in its soft power in the region, and that China uses its soft power, even with its limitations,to enhance its own domestic policy of the Chinese Dream.
