Zadie Smith is a rising star in the contemporary British literary scene,born in a mixed-race family in North West London.His works are mostly set in Willesden,North West London,and reproduce the living environment and mental state of different classes and communities in contemporary British society,which has certain practical significance.The purpose of this paper is to examine the writing of the city in Zadie Smith’s novels and consists of three parts: an introduction,a body and a conclusion.First,the introductory section discusses the origin of the study,the definition of the concept,the status of domestic and international research on Zadie Smith’s novels,and the research methods and innovations.Secondly,the first chapter of the main part deals with the presentation of urban writing in Zadie Smith’s novels,and discusses three aspects of urbanization,urban disease,and urban landscape in Zadie Smith’s novels respectively.The second chapter deals with the characteristics of urban writing in Zadie Smith’s no vels,which can be summarized as: spatialization of narrative,fragmentation of plot,a nd humorization of language.The third chapter focuses on the significance of Zadie Smith’s novels urban writing,which is reflected in the following three aspects: the ex amination of multiculturalism,the reflection on urban thinking,and the care for the u nderprivileged.Finally,the concluding section summarizes the urban writing of Zadi e Smith’s novels.Most domestic studies on Zadie Smith’s works have focused on postcolonialism,multiculturalism,and spatial criticism,and only a few studies on the urban writing of Zadie Smith’s novels have been conducted.Therefore,from the theories of urban sociology and urban culture,this paper conducts an in-depth and detailed study of the urban writing in Zadie Smith’s White Teeth,Northwest,Embassy House,and Swing Time,in order to reveal Zadie Smith’s thoughts on the potential problems of contemporary British society.
