| This report is based on the translation from English to Chinese of chapters 1-4 from the first part of the novel The Inheritance of Lion Hall by the best-selling German author Corina Bomann. This is a historical romance, and the novel focuses on three love stories of the heroine Agneta’s quest for freedom and independence on the eve of the First World War.In the process of translation, the translator encountered many difficulties due to the lack of knowledge relating to the language difference. Therefore, the main purpose of this report is to analyze the difficulties encountered in translation and the corresponding solutions. The difficulties encountered in the translation process are mainly at three levels: the lexical, the syntactic and the discourse level. At the lexical level, proper nouns, words derivation and words conversion were mainly discussed;at the syntactic level, attributive clauses and passive sentences were analyzed;and the discourse level mainly talks about character descriptions, psychological descriptions and scenic descriptions. Then, translation methods were discussed. In terms of vocabulary, transliteration was adopted for proper nouns, extension for words that require lexical derivation, and converting flexibly for words that require lexical conversion to better conform to Chinese rules. At the syntactic level, combination and division and converting the passive voice into the active one were used.At the level of discourse, the theme of setting off the characters’ personalities is maintained regardless of the descriptions in order to enhance the story.Through translation practice, the translator has accumulated translation experience and improved her writing ability, and learned that the translation ability still needs to be improved. In the future, the translator will continue to work hard to improve her knowledge base and translation ability. |
