| In recent years,China’s drive in popular science is gaining strong momentum after the statement by President Xi about science and technology innovation and popular science. As one of the main fronts of popularizing science education among the people,Guangdong Science Center is an important venue of science popularization in Guangdong Province and even the whole country. Its popular science education function is mainly realized through exhibits and the panels that serve to increase audiences’ interaction and understanding. The operability and comprehensibility of exhibits will directly affect the effect of science popularization to the public. What is written on exhibit panels belongs to the text type of popular science, which is a branch of the scientific and technological text. However, the discourse style of popular science is not merely limited to that of informational text.It possesses features of both science and literature. It has its unique characteristics and is of great significance for popularizing scientific knowledge and improving the scientific and cultural awareness of the public. The translation of popular science texts has received extensive attention all over the world.Yet,the study of popular science translation in China is still at a developing state. At the moment,China is still lagging behind countries in western countries in the overall translation quality and creations of popular science. The past few decades have witnessed many domestic studies on the translation of popular science texts, but most of them lack a systematic theoretical framework. The report material is selected from the exhibit panels in the eight theme halls of Guangdong Science Center, covering the fields of physics, chemistry, biology, aerospace, environmental protection, etc.Within the framework of Verschueren’s Adaptation Theory, the paper discusses the translation of popular science text, and regards translation in the field as a process in which translators make dynamic choices and constant adaptation.Starting from the aspects of contextual correlates of adaptability, structural objects of adaptability and the dynamics of adaption, the report tries to illustrate how dynamic adaptation is made to the context of the target language in the actual translation process through different translation strategies.By doing this, the author hopes to provide reference for translators to make better linguistic choices in popular science translation under the guidance of the Adaptation Theory. The purpose of the report will be achieved if the thesis can help the translation of popular science texts better serve science and technology development and promote social progress. |
