| In the period of structuralism,Roland Barthes once put forward the judgment of "the Death of the Author" and pronounced the "death" of subjectivity in writing practice. However,in his later years, the subject with personality and independent intentionality came back again in his writing practice. This paper holds that “subject” has undergone the remodeling process of double negation and appears in Barthes’ writing(speaking)in a new way.Roland Barthes’ three major literary works in his later years separately are Roland Barthes by Roland Barthes,A Lover’s Discourse: fragments and Camera Lucida:Reflections on Photography. In this paper, with the aid of the core concepts in Lacan’s subject philosophy which is intertextual with Barthes’ s later thoughts, the meaning of the word “subject” in these three works spreads out: the "subject" exists in such a way, that is,driven by a blind desire of retrieving the impossible inner “reality”,the “subject”chooses to be writing or speaking eternally in the symbolic realm. This paper holds that the resurrected "subject" is born from the dialectic operation of dissociation between representation and reality. On the one hand, because of the impossible inner “reality” beyond the symbolic realm which is regarded as a basis for the subject’s existence, the subject succeeds in avoiding the fate of alienation by the Other of symbolic realm in the period of structuralism. On the other hand,it also helps the subject restores its initiative as a subject. However, the "subject" that stands up again has shed the arrogance of the rational subject based on epistemology in the period of pre-structuralism.So we’d say Barthes revised his previous thought of "subject absent" and pointed out an ideal path for how to place the subject in writing(speaking)practice. |
