The carving skill is an important part of ancient Huizhou culture and it is a treasure precipitated by historical rivers,as well as a kind of spiritual inheritance.Huizhou is a place endowed with the fine spirits of the universe and also a treasure land.Huizhou wood carvings have distinctive cultural characteristics.The existing woodcarving remains are relatively intact,known as the "living fossil" of Huizhou,and have important artistic value.Of ancient Huizhou in economy and culture during the Ming and Qing dynasties reached an unprecedented height,the accumulation of wealth of Huizhou merchants laid the foundation for the development of Huizhou culture.Huizhou merchants advocate Confucian culture and pay great attention to education.In the annals of Huizhou government in the Kangxi period,it is said that Huizhou government has 54 academies,562 social schools,and various types of schools.This shows that Huizhou has a strong style of study.Through the imperial examination,great talents of Huizhou appear successively who improve the overall quality and cultural deposits.Since then,the formation of Xin ’an Painting School has exerted a profound influence on Huizhou wood carving for more than a hundred years.The three crafts of Huizhou carving(wood carving,stone carving and brick carving)have also been changing with the enhancement of culture and aesthetics and have a strong local color.Although Huizhou wood carving pattern is the decoration of woodcarving buildings,it is also an independent pattern art.As an art form,it is closely related to woodcarving techniques,and its development process is also influenced by economy,culture,customs,techniques,regulations,etc.Under the influence,the carving techniques have changed from simple and simple to exquisite and complicated,and the themes have become more and more abundant and instructive.Through the background and significance of literature research,this thesis explores the formation and development of woodcarving patterns,promotes them from two categories: economy and culture,and studies the development process of woodcarving patterns by using iconography and sorts them out.Firstly,it starts from the background and research significance of Huizhou wood carving.Exploring the formation and development of woodcarving is promoted from two categories: economy and culture.With the timeline of dynasty replacement,this thesis sorts out the influence of Huizhou merchants’ culture and the cultural atmosphere of emphasizing education and promoting learning on the development of wood carving patterns.Secondly,the types and themes of wood carving patterns.In Ming Dynasty,wood carving patterns were rough and simple,and their shapes were simple.After the Qing Dynasty,wood carving techniques gradually changed to fine ones,and the themes and stories of patterns were more far-ranging,and patterns conveyed folk moral.This article combed the graphic and literature records of patterns,and analyzed them with examples of ancient buildings.Then,it explores the cultural connotation and aesthetic value of woodcarving and patterns,investigates the inheritance and innovation of ancient Huizhou wood carving patterns,and how to break away from the replica of a single pattern and have a new collision with products at present.Finally,it summarizes the research and summary of Huizhou wood carving patterns.
