On The Translation Of Adventure Fiction From Perspective Of Relevance Translation Theory ——Taking With Sword And Crucifix As An Example

Relevance translation theory explains the influence of linguistic communication and reasoning as well as context on translation.It explains translation communicative and informational intentions,contextual assumptions,and relevance,and provides guidance for translation practice.This paper draws on the theory to explore the translation of adventure novels.The novel is With Sword and Crucifix,an adventure novel by Edward Sims Van Zile.The scope of this study covers the first six chapters of the novel,which has an undulating plot and outstanding characters,with the colonial pioneering era as the background,and tells the story of the main character’s thrilling adventures in the Mississippi River.The difficulties in translating are as follows.Firstly,with different elements of adventure,the author and readers have different cognitive structures.Secondly,in different contexts,the explicit information needed to be adjusted by the implications.Finally,it’s necessary to consider the readers’ reading expectations.The paper first expresses the author’s communicative intentions in the translation by explicit translation strategy.It adds cultural background information and enhances contextual assumptions.Secondly,it adjusts the syntactic structure and word order of English,which are different from Chinese.Finally,by literal translation,it retains potential implications left by the author.Therefore,translators can combine explicit and implicit translation and apply literal translation,liberal translation and amplification,to match communicative intention and informational intention and enhance contextual assumptions.With differences between Chinese and English,they need to adjust syntactic structure and word order.In addition,translators can also use direct translation to retain the style of the original language and deliver implications.
