| Although the development of human civilization, the conflict between human beings and nature is continuously increasing. It is necessary and urgent to put ecological protection into practice.Specialists from all walks of life pay more attention to appeal to ecological civilization and improve the current situation of ecological environment.Ecolinguistics emerges with studies from the perceptive of relationship between language and ecology increasing.Based on researches,it mostly connects with environmental news discourse, ecotourism discourse, literature discourse. At present, few researches refer to analyze disaster news discourse from the perspective of eco-critical discourse analysis. The thesis will employ Fairclough’s three-dimensional analytical framework to analyze transitivity system in 20 selected disaster news reports with the topic about Australian bushfire from the perspective of eco-critical discourse analysis. These selected news reports are from The Sydney Herald Morning and Australian Broadcasting News, which are the Australian mainstream media and enjoy high reputation and authority. In addition, the time period of the selected corpus is limited by June 2019 to March 2020 in which bushfire starts and ends. The thesis will answer three questions: First, the distribution of transitivity system in the selected news reports.Second,non-ecological features hidden the transitivity system in selected texts.Thirdly, the relationship between disaster news discourse and ecological civilization.Based on these questions, the study employs UAM corpus Tool to calculate the proportion of six types of process and participants under the guidance of Halliday’s transitivity system. Moreover, the thesis reveals the non-ecological features concealed in transitivity system and further explores the relationship between language and ecological civilization. There are some major findings in the study. In description stage, according to data statistic and analysis, six types of clauses all exist in the selected corpus.Among these, material clauses, verbal clauses and relational clauses are the main types of clauses. While the rest of types of clauses including existential clauses, mental clauses and behavioral clauses take up a small proportion in all clauses. In addition, common participants as subjects of clauses are also summarized in six types of clauses,in which, the category of“people” has the largest proportion. In interpretation stage, the thesis analyzes and reveals these non-ecological features hidden in the selected news reports under the guidance of thoughts of green grammar.According to case study,non-ecological features such as anthropocentrism, growthism and classism are embodied in five types of clauses.Furthermore,in explanation stage, this study focuses on exploring the relationship between disaster news discourse and ecological civilization.Language not only reflects social reality but also affects ecological civilization. There are theoretical and practical implications in the thesis.Theoretically, the study reveals and criticizes these non-ecological features in disaster news reports by employing Fairclough’s three-dimensional models as analytical framework and Halliday’s transitivity system as theoretical basis, which broadens types of discursive analysis to news reports from the perspective of eco-critical discourse analysis.Practically, the thesis is beneficial to cultivating readers’ critical thinking to recognize non-ecological features in news reports, further improving the public’s awareness of environmental protection. |
