With the deepening of research on second language acquisition,the importance of learners’ own affective factors in second language learning has gradually become the focus of foreign language teaching research.English pronunciation self-concept and learning anxiety,as important affective categories,are of great significance to English learning.In view of the fact that English majors in private universities,as a special group of English learners,are different from those in public universities,generally speaking,their basic English level is weak,they are anxious about English learning,and they do not have a high evaluation of their English pronunciation,thus they tend to be less successful in English exams.Therefore,this study attempts to explore the relationship and influence between English pronunciation self-concept,English learning anxiety and English achievement of English majors in private universities,in order to provide help for improving English teaching in private colleges and universities.By adopting the methods of literature analysis,questionnaire survey and statistical analysis,this study investigates 329 third-and fourth-year English majors in a private college in Quanzhou,the research mainly focuses on three questions: 1)What are the general situations of English pronunciation self-concept and English learning anxiety of English majors in private universities? Are there differences between the different grades ? 2)Are there any correlations among English pronunciation self-concept,English learning anxiety and English achievement of English majors in private universities? 3)Is there any mediating effect of English learning anxiety between English pronunciation self-concept and English achievement of English majors in private universities?The findings are as follow:1)the mean values of English pronunciation self-concept and English learning anxiety of English majors in private universities are 3.479 and 2.921 respectively.In terms of grade differences,English pronunciation self-concept matches P=0.000<0.05,English learning anxiety matches P=0.002<0.05.2)the correlation coefficient value between English pronunciation self-concept and English achievement matches r=0.450,P=0.000<0.05;the correlation coefficient value between English learning anxiety and English achievement matches r=-0.432,P=0.000<0.05;the correlation coefficient value between English pronunciation self-concept and English learning anxiety matches r=-0.245,P=0.000<0.05.3)in the mediation model of ‘English pronunciation self-concept-English learning anxiety-English achievement’,the direct effect value is 0.353,P= 0.001<0.05,the indirect effect value is 0.096,P= 0.001<0.05;the total effect value is 0.450,P=0.001<0.05.The conclusions are as follows: 1)The English pronunciation self-concept level of the English majors in private universities is above the middle level,and the English learning anxiety is at the middle level;There are significant grade differences in English pronunciation self-concept and English learning anxiety between different grades,and the level of English pronunciation self-concept of the third grade students is higher than that of the fourth grade students,the level of English learning anxiety of grade four students is higher than that of grade three students.2)There are two-to-two correlations among the English pronunciation self-concept,English learning anxiety and English achievement of the English majors in private universities,among them,English pronunciation self-concept is positively correlated with English achievement,and English learning anxiety is negatively correlated with English achievement,and there is a significant negative correlation between English pronunciation self-concept and English learning anxiety.3)The English learning anxiety has a partly mediating effect between English pronunciation self-concept and English achievement.Finally,based on the research and analysis of English pronunciation self-concept and English learning anxiety of English majors in private universities,the author puts forward some suggestions to improve English teaching in private universities,in order to improve students’ English pronunciation self-concept level,alleviate English learning anxiety,and thus promote the English level of students.
