Abstract/Summary:
Margaret Atwood was a famous Canadian woman writer, and her works are rich in body writing. The body serves as a catalyst to highlight the theme of the works, which not only carries the writer’s rational thinking, but also conveys Atwood’s emotional feelings about women’s living conditions. From the perspective of “body”,this paper studies Margaret Atwood’s The Edible Woman,Lady Oracle and The Handmaid’s Tale, exploring the body’s relevance to these novels. At the same time, the author makes a systematic study of the three novels mentioned above by Margaret Atwood with the help of body theory. The introduction introduces the purpose and significance of the topic, and summarizes Atwood’s research status at home and abroad. The first chapter “Body in narrative”,focusing on the narrative level of the body.First of all,the author explains the body narrative theory, mainly using Peter Brooks’ body narratology theory to explore how the body acts on Atwood’s novels, which has become an important part.In terms of content, the morbid body and various body images have metaphorical nature, which is of great significance to construct the theme of the story. At the same time, the body also participates in the narrative process as a strategy. The body as the principal expression of desire, which forms the basic line of story development and is the internal power of narration. The second chapter “Body in liminal Space” takes the special body space of women as the viewpoint. This paper mainly discusses the intermediate state of female body in Atwood’s novels by using the threshold theory of French anthropologist Arnold Van Gennep. It expresses Atwood’s deep concern for women’s living conditions.Chapter three discusses “Body in the Field” from the perspective of body writing strategy, adopting Foucault’s interpretation of power and Bourdieu’s “field” discourse.Specifically shown in the power field,Female body are disciplined by male’s power, and women use their bodies as weapons to effectively resist, expressing Atwood’s deep insight into the relationship between body and power. The conclusion holds that from the perspective of the body,we can more intuitively and truly feel Atwood’s concern about women’s living state by flexibly and neatly adopting relevant theoretical discourse, which expresses Atwood’s unique thinking and humanistic concern for the fate of women.
