| In students’ English learning process,teacher mediation is of great significance.However,most of the researches focus on the English class in college and middle school,few concentrating on teacher mediation of English class in primary school,which inspires the present study,with the hope that it provides insights into English teaching at the elementary stage.Based on Feuerstein’s Mediation Theory,with 24 primary school English teachers as subjects,this study surveys their perceptions and practices of teacher mediation in reading class.The questionnaire was designed based on Warren’s(1995)Teacher Mediation Questionnaire and Marion William and Robert L Burden’s(2000)Teacher Mediation Questionnaire,and the supplementary data was from classroom observation and interview.The present research aims to explore the following issues: 1)What is the general picture of teachers’ perception of mediation in English reading? 2)What is the general picture of teachers’ practice of mediation in English reading? 3)Does there exist a significant difference of teachers’ perception of mediation in terms of their personal variables(teaching period,teacher’s professional title,educational background and workload)? 4)What problems exist in teacher mediation in English reading?Result indicates as follows: Primary school English teachers can realize the importance of teacher mediation in reading class and they can apply it well in their teaching practice.There is no significant difference of teachers’ perception of teacher mediation in terms of their personal variables,which contain teaching period,teacher’s professional title,educational background and workload.And there are some problems in teacher mediation in primary school English reading class such as teachers do not understand the connotation and denotation of teacher mediation,students’ learning objectives are obscure,and students’ learning process cannot be monitored by themselves etc.At last,some practical suggestions for making best use of teacher mediation to improve primary school English reading class and the teaching efficiency of primary school high grader’s English class are offered. |
