| This is a report on E-C translation practice.The source text is excerpted from the subtitles of a Harvard course Technology Entrepreneurship: Lab to Market which is a MOOC about innovation and entrepreneurship.In order to help UESTC students who studying the course “Internet +:Innovation and Entrepreneur from 0 to 1” to learn this MOOC,subtitles are translated from English to Chinese.After the translation work is completed,the author excerpts parts of subtitles texts as the object of this report in which translation methods of MOOC subtitles are discussed in detail.Subtitles of Technology Entrepreneurship: Lab to Market mainly serve the video lectures to transmit information to the audience.From the perspective of translation function,Peter Newmark’s theory of Text Typology holds that different types of texts have different functions and there are three major text types: informative text,expressive text and vocative text.In order to achieve various functions,different translation methods need to be selected,and semantic translation and communicative translation are the main methods targeted at those three different text types.In view of this,Newmark’s Text Typology serves as the main guiding theory of this report to guarantee a more comprehensive analysis on the translation methods based on features and function of the source text.In order to translate the subtitles of the MOOC and serve the target readers in a faithful and satisfactory way,the author takes into consideration both the general characteristics of the source text as subtitles and the distinct characteristics of the source text as a MOOC.With regard to these,the author summarizes three features: limitation of time and space,academic features and colloquialism.At the same time,there are two tough challenges for translation practice: the rendering of rhetorical devices and textual incoherence.Under the guidance of Text Typology,the author summarizes the translation methods used in subtitle translation practice.The author overcomes the obstacles of understanding caused by the limitation of time and space by restructuring sentences with clauses and segmenting long compound sentences.Aiming at the words and phrases that are emerging technical terms in the selected text,the author combines literal translation with free translation in order to retain the academic characteristics of this text while taking into account the acceptance of readers.While colloquialism is handled by retaining spoken words and deleting oral mistakes to retain the original language style which avoid excessive colloquialism.In view of the rhetorical devices,the author clarifies obscure figures of speech to smooth readers’ understanding,while maintains parallel structures to echo with the original.In addition,the author strengthens textual coherence of the translated text by completing fragmentary sentences and explaining pronouns.This translation report expounds the detailed implementation scheme and translation effect through examples.Finally,it comes to the conclusion that Newmark’s Text Typology and translation methods provide a new perspective for subtitle translation practice of MOOCs and have certain guiding significance. |
