English reading teaching is an important part of the English teaching system in senior high school. The students’ reading ability is one of the important abilities and qualities to accurately grasp knowledge points and flexibly use the English language when learning English knowledge.Under the background of promoting the "New Curriculum Reform",the requirements for students’ critical reading ability have been significantly improved.English reading teaching is the focus of senior high school teaching.Consciously cultivating students’ critical thinking ability is conducive to improving students’ independent thinking ability, which is closely related to reading teaching. However, there are still some problems in the cultivation of critical thinking ability in English reading teaching. The article takes English reading class in senior high school as a research case to study the cultivation of students’ critical thinking ability in English reading learning in view of the shortcomings in cultivating the critical reading ability of senior high school students in China.Firstly,a questionnaire survey was designed to investigate and analyze the critical thinking ability of senior high school students in English reading class.Secondly, through the interview method, this paper summarizes and analyzes the teaching status quo of high school English teachers, their cognitive degree of critical thinking and the cultivation of students’ critical thinking ability in the teaching process. In addition, classroom observation is used to summarize and analyze students’ performance in class,as well as the interaction and communication between teachers and students and the teaching methods.According to the article, there are two main reasons for the inadequate cultivation of critical thinking ability of English reading students in senior high school. One is that teachers lag behind in teaching concepts and pay little attention to critical thinking ability. The second is the lack of students’ cognitive learning concept, the influence of the social environment and the deficiency of evaluation mechanism. In view of the above deficiencies, this study carries out corresponding countermeasures. The four strategies of "the improvement of teachers’ teaching mode","the construction of students’ cognitive system","the integration of teaching and research" and "the construction of a diversified evaluation system” are applied.Firstly, strategies such as "condensed teaching","adhering to the concept of critical thinking in teaching" and "creating classroom atmosphere" are proposed to improve teachers’ teaching mode.Secondly, measures such as"proper questions","reasonable selection of materials" and "strengthening thinking training"are adopted to construct students’ cognitive system. Then, teachers should pay attention to the teaching and research of critical thinking to improve their own teaching level and cognitive ability. Finally, diversified evaluation are implemented to promote students’ positive thinking. In addition,in terms of teaching and learning, the teaching steps of critical reading training are designed, such as "stimulating collective wisdom","from point to line, from line to plane","straightening out the main line of text","reasoning and analysis, deep understanding of text information" and "sublimating training after class to comprehensively improve the quality of thinking".This study shows that promoting the cultivation of students’ critical thinking plays a positive role in senior high school English teaching, and teachers should consciously use appropriate countermeasures to continuously improve the quality of reading teaching.
