Grandiose Narcissism Admiration Rivalry Concept And Pro-environmental Tendency Of Adolescents At Different Developmental Stages

The perception of connection between self and nature is the cognitive basis of pro-environment,on which the inner pro-environment emotional experience is developed.Pro-environment behavior is a kind of green and sustainable behavior under the comprehensive influence of cognition and emotion.The pro-environment cognition,emotion and behavioral intention are closely related to self-development.Early adolescents’ cognition of the relationship between self and nature relatively retains its purity,and is less restricted by different social cultures and systems.The middle adolescents are in a period of rich and diverse emotional development,and easy to be controlled by emotion;The narcissism and consumption habits of the late adolescents are basically stable.From the perspective of the collaborative development of narcissism and pro-environment tendency,this study adopts the method of cross-section study,and analyzes the relationship between narcissism admiration-rivalry and the pro-environment tendency of adolescents in three aspects of cognition,emotion and behavioral intention,according to the typical psychological characteristics of adolescents at different ages.Meanwhile,a new way to influence the pro-environment behavior tendency of narcissists was explored by activating the awe emotion of mature adolescents.In study one,we explore two subtypes of arrogant narcissism,namely narcissism admiration-rivalry,and the different relationship between these two subtypes and the pro-environment cognition level.In study two,we further explore the different effects of narcissism admiration-rivalry on pro-environment emotion and the mediating mechanism of its internal psychological mechanism.In study three,we compared the difference of pro-environment behavior tendency between the experimental group and the control group with different levels of narcissism.The main findings of this study are as follows:（1）In the early adolescent group,narcissism admiration has a significant positive effect on predicting natural connection,while narcissism rivalry has no significant negative effect on predicting natural connection.（2）In the middle adolescent group,narcissists of different subtypes of narcissism have different moral identity,gratitude feelings and pro-environment emotions: Moral identity and gratitude respectively mediate the relationship between narcissism and pro-environment affective tendency,and jointly mediate the relationship between them,presenting a chain mediation effect（the level of moral identity affects the level of gratitude）.（3）In the end adolescent group,the relationship between narcissism and pro-environment behavior tendency was moderated by awe only in the product consumption situation with low self-involvement,but the interaction between awe and narcissism was not significant in the product consumption situation with high self-involvement.According to the results of the three studies,admiration and competitive narcissism show different pro-environment tendencies at different stages of adolescents: with the increase of adolescents’ age,the positive influence of admiration narcissism on pro-environment tendency decreases,and the negative influence of competitive narcissism on pro-environment tendency increases.Specifically,in the early and middle adolescents,admiration narcissism positively predicted the pro-environment tendency at the cognitive and emotional levels.In late adolescence,admiration narcissism alone has no significant predictive effect on pro-environment behavior tendency,but under the influence of awe,it can significantly enhance pro-environment behavior tendency.In early adolescence,competitive narcissism has no significant negative predictive effect on pro-environment orientation at the cognitive level.In the middle adolescents,competitive narcissism has a significant negative effect on the affective level of pro-environment orientation.In late adolescence,competitive narcissism still had a significant negative predictive effect on pro-environment behavior tendency,but awe still mitigated this negative effect.
