As one of the representative figures of traditional Jiangnan Sizhu music in the 20 th century,Chen Zhong is proficient in the performance of bamboo flute,pipe flute,taoxun,guqin,pipa,erhu and other ethnic instruments,having mastered each excellently.His flute work has a certain academic value in the traditional Chinese flute work community.Chen Zhong stood out in the first National Music Week Art Performance after the founding of the People’s Republic of China.He is a member of the first generation of flute performers appointed by and teaching within art universities and colleges.His more than 30 years of professional teaching and more than 70 years of a career in the arts have made due contributions to the inheritance and development of Chinese national instrumental music and talent training.In the late 1950’s,he adapted and composed the bamboo flute solo "Chao Yuan Ge" and pipe flute solo "Zhuang Tai Qiu Si".These works incorporated the essence of Kunqu Opera singing and traditional music,and adopted Southern traditional playing techniques,creating a sound both sweet and rich.Chen Zhong’s work demonstrates his exceptional breath control capability,as well as his flexible finger technique,forming a kind of artistic style which is elegant and classic.This thesis focuses on the two works of Chao Yuan Ge and Zhuang Tai Qiu Si,and analyzes the application of techniques and artistic characteristics of Chen Zhong’s flute performances.
