Abstract/Summary:
With the rapid urbanization in China,a large number of rural laborers have moved to the cities to work, but a large number of children and adolescents are left behind due to the lack of urban school places. The long-term separation of relatives and the hollowing out of living environment make the mental health problems of left-behind children and adolescents gradually appear and become a hot issue of concern for the whole society.Often,it is believed that children and adolescents left behind suffer more psychological and emotional distress than their non-left behind peers. However, from the perspective of positive psychology, human beings have the power of self-growth,and children and adolescents in adversity can still overcome adversity through positive internal and external forces.Positive personality traits such as adversity beliefs and psychological capital of left-behind children and adolescents and positive interpersonal environments such as family intimacy and campus interpersonal support can buffer the negative effects of the left-behind experience. This study analyzes the moderating relationship between positive personality traits and positive interpersonal support in the relationship between life events and psychological adjustment of adolescents.Using a large sample of questionnaires, this study investigated life events, positive personality traits(adversity beliefs and psychological capital),proximal interpersonal support environments(family support and teacher-student support),and psychological adjustment(life satisfaction and depression)in 1047 left-behind adolescents and 1022non-left-behind adolescents, and through data analysis, revealed that life events, positive personality traits, and positive interpersonal support in complex relationships with psychological adjustment of retained or non-retained adolescents. The findings of this study are as follows.(1)The more life events one adolescent experiences, the lower the life satisfaction and the higher the tendency to depression.(2)Adolescents’ positive personality traits contribute to their psychological adjustment;specifically, stronger adversity beliefs and psychological capital are associated with higher life satisfaction and lower depressive tendencies.(3)The stronger the proximal interpersonal support(family closeness and campus interpersonal support)experienced by adolescents, the higher their life satisfaction and the lower their depressive tendencies.(4)Positive personality traits and interpersonal support have different moderating effects on left behind and non-left behind children and adolescents in rural areas. In the group of non-left behind children and adolescents, psychological capital, family cohesion and campus interpersonal support can reduce the negative impact of life events of non left behind children and adolescents, and reduce their depression level. In the group of left behind children and adolescents,self-efficacy in psychological capital can reduce the negative impact of life events of left behind children and adolescents and reduce their depression level.
