| Numbers constitute an important aspect of our everyday life.We permanently use them to individuate, quantify, and rank concrete objects and abstract entities. Many researchers have argued that the mental representation of quantity is intimately connected to representations of space. And this relationship is defined as Number-Space Interactions.demonstrated, for example,by the spatial-numerical association of response codes(SNARC)effect. With the deepening of Number-Space interactions, research has begun to explore the coding mechanism of this interactions, and it is believed that there are two types of coding: visual spatial coding and verbal-spatial coding. However, few studies have explored which factors have an impact on the coding strategy of Number-Space Interactions, and a large number of studies have only studied the coding of Number-Space Interactions in the SNARC effect, and whether other effects in Number-Space Interactions can also get consistent results. Therefore, these problems deserve further discussion. In this study,132 college students in a university in Gui Zhou were selected to investigate the effects of different task instructions and task types on coding of Number-Space Interactions, the Chinese characters(right, left)and Arabic numerals(1-9,except 5)are used as experimental materials. The parity judgment task and the magnitude comparison task are used to explore the influence of verbal and spatial instructions on the coding of Number-Space Interactions.Experiment 1 examines the coding of the Number-Space Interactions in the parity judgment task under the verbal instructions;Experiment 2 examines the coding of the Number-Space Interactions in the magnitude comparison task under the condition of the verbal instruction;Experiment 3 examines the coding of the Number-Space Interactions in the parity judgment task under the spatial instructions;Experiment 4 examines the coding of the Number-Space Interactions in the magnitude comparison task under the condition of the spatial instruction. The results show that,in Experiment 1,the results of ANOVA show that verbal-spatial coding has more advantages, and in the results of d RT regression analysis,MARC effect appears when word congruency, and reverse MARC effect appears when word incongruency, and no SNARC effect is found. In Experiment 2,the results of ANOVA show that verbal-spatial coding has more advantages, and in the results of d RT regression analysis,SNARC effect appears when word congruency, and reverse SNARC effect appears when word incongruency, and no MARC effect appears. In Experiment 3,the result of variance analysis shows that visualspatial coding is more advantageous, and in the result of d RT regression analysis, the result of variance analysis shows that there are both SNARC effect and MARC effect when word congruency and reverse SNARC effect when word incongruency. In Experiment 4,the result of variance analysis shows that visualspatial coding is more advantageous, and in the results of d RT regression analysis,we found that there was SNARC effect when the word congruency and congruency, and no MARC effect was found. The results show that:(1)The task instruction has an impact on the coding of the Number-Space Interactions.Under the condition of verbal instructions,verbal-spatial coding has more advantages;under the condition of spatial instructions,verbal-spatial coding has advantages.(2)The task type has an impact on the encoding of the Number-Space Interactions. In the parity judgment task,verbal-spatial coding is activated;visualspatial coding is activated in the magnitude comparison task.(3)The task type affects the effect of the Number-Space Interactions.MARC effect only appears in the parity judgment task;SNARC effect appears in both the magnitude comparison task and the parity judgment task. |
