Thailand has a long history of growing rice.This paper summarizes the history of Thailand’s rice industry before World War Ⅱ and its position in the traditional economy.From the perspective of Thailand’s political and economic development after World War Ⅱ,this paper combs the history of rice planting and its related industries.Before the 1850 s,rice cultivation in Thailand was mainly to meet the survival needs of the domestic people.Since then,the pressure caused by the colonial expansion of Western powers,Thai government has starts to make a connection with world,rice has become one of Thailand’s most important export products,occupies an important position in Thailand’s foreign trade,earns a lot of foreign exchange and makes an important contribution to Thailand’s modernization process.At the beginning of the end of the Second World War,the value of rice to Thailand was not only economic,but also political.On the one hand,Britain tried to force Thailand to provide huge amounts of rice in free to punish Thailand.On the other hand,the recovery of Thailand’s economy after the war also depends on the foreign exchange earned by rice export.During and after the cold war,Thailand’s political situation was generally stable.The foreign policy adopted by the Thai government enabled it to obtain a large amount of international economic assistance.The Thai government attached importance to domestic economic construction.These factors promoted the important development of Thai rice planting and related industries,and rice export played an important role in the international market.With the change of Thailand’s economic structure,the position of rice industry in Thailand’s economy,although important,has decreased significantly. |
