| The job market was greatly hit by the economic recession in 2019 and it was further weakened in 2020 affected by COVID-19.World Employment and Social Outlook —Trends 2020 is an official report of International Labor Organization and it has no Chinese version.This report summaries employment situation in different countries and the global employment trend in 2020 based on data collected from 189 countries.This employment report has three parts,and the translator chooses the preface and the first part for translation.According to text typology,the report is a typical informative text.This E-C translation project aims to present the identification of and solution to major difficulties impeding the translation work so as to provide some reference for translating the informative text.The lexical and syntactic difficulties are the main focuses of this project,which are listed as follows:(1)A mass of data;(2)The translation of terminologies and abbreviations;(3)Long and complex sentences.Through the study of background information,and with the help of Newmark’s text typology and certain translation methods,the translator puts forward solutions to the difficulties above:(1)As for data,it is important to ensure its accuracy,for example,the translator needs to make sure the accuracy of unit conversion.Besides,it is necessary to ensure the logic of data.The translator should display the logical relationship between data in translation.(2)For common terminologies and abbreviations,the principle of following the convention should be adopted;as for expressions with merely literal or no corresponding meanings in Chinese,the translator chooses to refer to the parallel texts or use substitution.(3)In terms of the translation of long and complex sentences,the translator mainly uses two translation methods,namely,division and reversing.Finally,the translator draws a conclusion by discussing the main findings of this thesis,pointing out its limitations and making relevant recommendations. |
