As an independent linguistic system, the interlanguage has characteristics that are different from both the learner’s native language and the target language in terms of phonology, vocabulary and grammar. The study of sentence patterns has traditionally been a central issue in the study of grammar.Sentences are the basic unit of language expression, and the ability to use a variety of sentence patterns flexibly has always been one of the most important indicators of second language learners to express themselves, but there has been little research on the overall appearance of sentence patterns used by specific learners in the field of Chinese as a foreign language. In this paper,we use quantitative analysis to describe the use of Chinese sentence patterns in the written expressions of Japanese learners, comparing the differences in the use of sentence patterns among learners of different genres, levels and genders, and analyzing specific sentence patterns with high frequencies or high acquisition difficulties, with the hope of outlining the interlanguage of Japanese advanced Chinese learners in a combination of points, lines and surfaces. It is hoped that this study will provide a comprehensive picture of Japanese advanced Chinese learners’ interlanguage sentence patterns, promote further research on Chinese sentence patterns, and provide some reference for teaching Chinese as a foreign language. The study finds that Japanese learners’ use of single sentences is dominated by subject-predicate sentences, with verbal predicates taking the absolute advantage and the most frequent use of expository-predicate sentences. Most of the special sentence types, such as the ba sentence and the comparative sentence, are used relatively frequently but not very often in absolute terms. In terms of compound sentences,Japanese learners use the transitive and causative categories of the positive compound sentences most frequently, the four categories of parallelism, hypothetical, prolegomenon and progression most frequently, the conditional, explanatory and purposive categories less frequently, and the category of choice least frequently. The sentence system of Japanese learners’ interlanguage sentences showed strong consistency with those of native Chinese speakers and Korean learners, but it showed greater differences in the use of verbal non-subject-predicate sentences. The frequency difference ratio between their single sentences was much greater than that between their compound sentences.Of the three factors, genre, level and gender, the genre factor had the most direct effect on sentence use, with different genres of writing, learners’ levels and gender all showing some degree of variation in the use of different types of single and compound sentences. The analysis of the four specific sentence patterns showed that Japanese learners had a strong tendency to use the sentence pattern sub-categories,with a large difference in the frequency of use of different sub-categories of the same sentence pattern.Advanced learners were able to use the sentence patterns in Chinese more accurately. Therefore,in the teaching of sentence patterns in Chinese as a foreign language,it is necessary to pay attention to the differences in the use of sentence patterns among learners of different genres, levels and genders, and to focus on the richness and complexity of sentence patterns in different teaching contexts.
