In foreign language teaching,reading teaching has always been one of the focuses of researchers.However,in English teaching practice,although teachers pay attention to teaching reading,students’ reading performance is still poor,and some students even fail in reading performance.Most teachers pay too much attention to the content,structure,vocabulary and grammar of the article,while ignoring the cultivation of students’ reading motivation.In order to more clearly understand junior high school students’ English reading motivation,and the correlation between junior high students’ English reading motivation and English achievement,so as to facilitate teachers to carry out English reading teaching for junior high school students,the author puts forward the following questions: What is the current situation of junior high school students’ English reading motivation? What is the correlation between junior high school students’ English reading motivation and English reading achievement?The author takes 100 students in Grade Two of a junior high school in Jinan as the research subjects,collects relevant data through questionnaire,interview and test,and then analyzes the data using SPSS 24.0.The following conclusions are drawn: 1.Junior high school students’ English reading motivation is at the medium level,mainly driven by external motivation and internal motivation.2.There is a moderate positive correlation between junior high students’ English reading motivation and English reading achievement.Specifically,there is a negative correlation between“reading work avoidance” and reading achievement,and there are different degrees of positive correlation between other dimensions and reading achievement.Among the11 dimensions of reading motivation,“reading for grades”(correlation coefficient r=0.544)and “competition in reading”(correlation coefficient r=0.514)have the most significant correlation with English reading achievement.Based on the results,the author gives some suggestions for English reading teaching.The study is expected to arouse English teachers’ attention to reading motivation,take relevant measures to mobilize students’ initiative for English reading activities and stimulate students’ enthusiasm for English reading,so as to improve reading proficiency and overall English level.
