Nowadays, the dissemination of Chinese children’s literature is making slow progress. On the one hand, there are some social factors leading to this problem and they need to be analyzed in different ways.On the other hand, there are also some factors of translation quality and thus new requirements for children’s literature translation criticism have appeared.Children’s literature translation needs a child-centered translation criticism theory, because it has special target readers and unique characteristics.Children’s literature translation criticism is indispensable to improving the quality of children’s literature translation.Taking the work Bronze and Sunflower by Chinese children’s literature writer Cao Wenxuan as an example, guided by the translation criticism theory of children’s literature proposed by Xu Derong of Ocean University of China, and via the research method of close reading, this thesis appreciates and analyzes the translation of Bronze and Sunflower by sinologist Helen Wang.As a work of youth literature,Bronze and Sunflower still has the general characteristics of children’s literature. The scenes in the work are beautiful, and the language is concise, smooth and full of interest. At the same time, some translation difficulties are found caused by language characteristics and Chinese culture, such as the translation of children’s songs and folk language.According to the three parameters in the theoretical framework,it is found that the translator handled these difficulties properly. For accuracy, the translator Helen Wang made a few translation errors because she did not recognize the polyphonic character and the polysemy word.Chinese people often use words such as appellations, units and things with Chinese characteristics and folk language in conversations, when translating these habitual expressions, the translator used a variety of techniques and strategies to make the translation as accurate as possible, such as conversion, addition, deletion, corresponding translation and so on,and the use of these techniques make the translation more accurate and appropriate. For readability, the translator mainly adopted two strategies to translate the onomatopoeias. To handle with one Chinese word containing several sounds, the translator adopted literal translation to make the translation concise and faithful to the original text. For the same onomatopoeia in different contexts, the translator adopted free translation to make the translation more in line with the context which increases the readability. When facing some words and phrases in the original text that are inappropriate for children or some sentences not easy for children to understand, the translator chose not to translate, which also improves the readability. For children’s songs,Wang mainly used the method of omission to omit unnecessary and complex content while conveying the beauty of the form, rhythm and rhyme in her translation. For literariness for children, the first discussion is about the rhetoric. This thesis first discusses the rhetoric of repetition. The translator used the inflectional forms of words to achieve the repeated effect, and that practice can make the target language readers have a sense of familiarity. Then there is the rhetoric of parallelism, the translator used parallel structure to enhance the momentum of the sentences,or used the method of combination to make the sentences concise and smooth. The third is analogy, the flexible uses of simile and metaphor make the story more natural and vivid. The second part of the discussion of children’s literature is some expressions of childishness,Wang tried to understand children’s thoughts from the perspective of children and grasped children’s psychological characteristics, and the practice improves literariness for children of the work. This study makes a comprehensive appreciation of the translation of Bronze and Sunflower from multiple dimensions of children’s literature.Firstly,it demonstrates the feasibility of Xu Derong’s translation criticism of children’s literature.Secondly, the successful experience of various techniques and strategies adopted by the translator in translation provides valuable references for the translation and publicity of children’s literature in the future. |
