The Research On The Modeling Art Of Yangzhou Wooden Rod Puppet

Wooden rod puppet is an indispensable species in my country’s puppet art,which has a long history.The Yangzhou wooden rod puppet is one of the most important of these,and is one of the three most important puppets in China,together with the string puppet from Quanzhou,Fujian and the hand puppet from Zhangzhou,Fujian.Moreover,it was listed as a national intangible cultural heritage item in 2008.So what makes the Yangzhou wooden rod puppet stands out from the rest of the country?What are the artistic characteristics of its shape?And what are the reasons for the shape?This paper uses fieldwork to obtain first-hand information from the Yangzhou Puppet Theatre,Yangzhou Puppet Modelling Production Centre,Yangzhou Canal Theatre and other places in Yangzhou,Jiangsu Province.Based on the information collected,the artistic characteristics and causes of contemporary Yangzhou wooden rod puppet modelling are analysed,and new paths are sought for the inheritance and development of Yangzhou wooden rod puppet modelling.The text is divided into four parts.The first part combs the history of the development of Yangzhou wooden rod puppett modelling is outlined to pave the way for the study of contemporary Yangzhou wooden rod puppet modelling.In the second part,the exaggerated and distorted modelling,decorative patterns and contrasting colours of contemporary Yangzhou wooden rod puppets are analysed according to the subject matter of the play,and this part explains the aesthetic value of the shapes.In the third part,the causes of contemporary Yangzhou wooden rod puppet modelling are analysed in terms of traditional folk customs,the concept of education for fun and the production process.In the fourth part,the group of inheritors behind the puppet modelling and the existing shortcomings of the puppet modelling are considered,and practical approaches to the inheritance and innovate the Yangzhou wooden rod puppet modelling and market development are discussed.The Yangzhou wooden rod puppet modelings are shaped by designers,which not only as a reflection of their desire to inherit traditional forms,but also as a practical reflection of the search for a direction for the development of wooden rod puppet forms in the contemporary context.The process of creating puppets is also a process of identifying with folk art.In the new era,the inheritance and development of the Yangzhou wooden rod puppet should be taken seriously.
