| The Way of All Flesh mainly tells the story of the protagonist Ernest,who breaks free from the environmental and social constraints and gradually grows up as a man.In the process of his growth,different aspects are explored in the Victorian era which makes one think about his key choices on the road of growth.The excerpted chapters of this translation practice make extensive use of complex sentences such as subordinate clauses and compound sentences.In the process of translation,the difficulty lies in the fact that the translation has to take full account of the acceptability of readers,so the linguistic characteristics of the novel add to the difficulty of this translation practice.Guided by Newmark’s text typology theory,the author of this report translates the first six chapters of The Way ofAll Flesh.The Way ofAll Flesh is a popular novel,so it belongs to the vocative text according to the text typology theory.The vocative text emphasizes role played by the readers,and its main function is to call on readers to react according to what is said in the text.The author of this report analyzes the translation of complex sentences involved in the case from three perspectives:lexis,syntax and text.At the lexical level,the author adopts the translation skills of conversion,annotation and amplification.At the syntactic level,recasting,division and voice conversion are applied to translate long and complex sentences.In the end,it is concluded that the text typology translation theory has guiding significance for the translation of this popular novel,and for different translation difficulties,the translator needs to adopt different translation strategies in order to enhance the readability and acceptability of the translation.This translation report is divided into five parts.The first part is a brief introduction to the original author,the source text and the meaningfulness of this report.The second part introduces the content and applicability of the text typology theory.The third part describes the whole translation process,including pre-translation,while-translation and post-translation.The fourth part is a case study,which analyzes the specific translation skills from the lexical level,syntactic level and textual level.The fifth part is a conclusion,which summarizes gains and limitations. |
