Both English Curriculum Standards for Compulsory Education(2022 Edition)and National English Curriculum Standards for Senior High School(2017 Edition)emphasize that English teaching at the compulsory education stage aims to cultivate students’ skills of using English.Due to the insufficient training in English writing,many students in junior high schools do not know how to write and are afraid to write in English.Thus,writing teaching remains a major difficulty in English teaching reform for a long time.Professor Wen Qiufang and her research team proposed the Production-oriented Approach(POA),in order to solve the separation between English learning and using in Chinese higher education.POA regards output activity as both motives and teaching goals,and the input activity is considered as a way to improve the efficiency of foreign language teaching.After searching the relevant literature on POA,the author found that although POA is mostly applied and studied at the higher education stage,it has still drawn a lot of researchers’ attention in secondary schools.Hence,the author tries to apply POA to English writing teaching in the junior high school,aiming to explore its application in English writing teaching.This research of POA-based English writing teaching lasts for three months.The research subjects are students of Grade seven,aged about twelve.There are 26 students both in the experimental class(EC)and the control class(CC).According to the pre-test,students’writing levels in two classes are roughly the same.During the experiment,EC carries out writing teaching with POA,while CC applies the commonly used PWP writing teaching method.In this research,three research instruments of test,questionnaire,and interview are applied to collect data,to explore two questions as follows.(1)What’s the effect on students’ English writing scores after POA has been applied to English writing teaching in a junior high school?(2)What’s the effect on students’ writing motivation after POA has been applied to English writing teaching in a junior high school?The results show that students’ writing scores have been significantly promoted.For another,POA can effectively stimulate students’ writing motivation,and students’extrinsic motivation has been remarkably improved.Additionally,the research results also provide some pedagogical implications for English writing teaching.From the perspective of learning,one is that making students know the learning objectives before learning English can help improve students’ effective learning as well as enhance students’ extrinsic learning motivations.Next,students should focus on grasping vocabulary and effective expressions related to the writing task.For teachers,they would better clarify the teaching objectives and prepare different teaching materials based on different teaching objectives.In addition,teachers should practice the stratified teaching so as to meet the students’ different levels.This research indicates that there are some practical values to apply POA to English writing teaching in junior high schools.Nevertheless,when carrying out POA-based English writing teaching,teachers are required to pay attention to the stratified teaching and set different teaching objectives for students at different language levels.Moreover,since POA is applied in junior high schools on a large scale,further research is needed.
